What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of medicine developed in China thousands of years ago. There are various theories as to why it was realised that insertion of needles could influence health but fundamentally no one really knows and there continues to be speculation about how it works.
From the origins in China it spread around the Far East with different regions developing their own particular style. It may even have reached Europe at a very early stage given that there appeared to be the markings of acupuncture points and channels on the back of the 5000 year old Iceman found in the Alps several years ago. Its continued practise speaks for its effectiveness, achieved with safety and very few side effects.
In this country different schools of acupuncture teach different styles so treatment from an acupuncturist trained at one school can vary markedly from that by someone trained elsewhere. Common to all though is the insertion of single use fine stainless steel needles into the body to manipulate the flow of vital energy or Qi within the body, the use of moxibustion employing moxa, a processed form of Mugwort (Artimesia vulgaris,) to warm parts of the body or move Qi and the use of cupping to exert sucking pressure on the skin to draw out pathogens or increase blood flow to an area.
Who can it benefit?
Acupuncture has its own unique view of the body and is applicable to all age groups and for a wide range of problems. Eg it can enhance fertility in both men and women, can give relief for women with menstrual difficulties or menopausal problems, be safely used in pregnancy and can support IVF. Migraine sufferers have found relief here as have those with musculoskeletal problems of all sorts.
Contrary to expectations the insertion of needles can be profoundly relaxing helping to combat stress.
